Despite global fintech investment reaching a staggering US$105 billion (approximately R1.5 trillion) in 2020, leading to significant job creation and the development of innovative digital products and services, there remains a glaring disparity in the representation of women among successful tech entrepreneurs. Despite comprising 49.6% of the global population, women hold only around 25% of tech jobs worldwide. This begs the question: with the tech industry booming, why do women remain vastly underrepresented in tech companies, careers, and discussions? In this research report, we delve deep into uncovering the root causes, including challenges women face, biases in product design skewed towards male perspectives, the gender data gap, and why fostering diversity in tech is not only beneficial for the bottom line but also leads to better products.
